Rykken Skis began when Anne Rykken, xc skier, xc ski coach and soon-to-be-grandma needed two perfect baby shower gifts for her kids, who have been life-long cross country skiers. Two weeks from the day of the double baby shower, Anne set out looking for little wood skis she could buy. Finding none, she set out to make each new grandbaby a pair. It took a few attempts, but two pair turned out beautifully, and are precious! Anne enjoyed the project so much she has continued making them.

The skis are laminated with layers of ash, pine, and ash. I’ve made a few pair with a top oak veneer, but like the ash/pine/ash construction much better.

I have been to the Peltonen ski factory in Finland, so I understand how they can crank out so many skis for skiers all over the world. My ski-making facility is nothing like Peltonen’s or any other ski factory. In fact, it is no factory at all. In fact, if you must know all the facts, most of the process I use, is happening in our sauna – which in itself, it too small for a sauna! It makes a great place to bend and glue the skis though, and considering I make two skis at a time, it works!
